    Azithromycin for sinusitis

Millions of people are prescribed antibiotics each year for sinus infections, a frequent complication of the common cold, hay fever, and other respiratory allergies. In fact, 15 to 21 percent of all antibiotic prescriptions for adults in outpatient care are for treating sinus infections. People with the condition usually have a stuffy nose combined with yellow, green, or gray nasal discharge plus pain or pressure around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, or teeth that worsens when they bend over. Unfortunately, most of those people don’t need the drugs. But sinus infections almost always stem from a viral infection, not a bacterial one—and antibiotics don’t work against viruses. About one in four people who take antibiotics have side effects, such as stomach problems, dizziness, or rashes. Even when bacteria are the cause, the infections often clear up on their own in a week or so. Those problems clear up soon after stopping the drugs, but in rare cases antibiotics can cause severe allergic reactions. Overuse of antibiotics also promotes the growth of bacteria that can’t be controlled easily with drugs. That makes you more vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant infections and undermines the good that antibiotics can do for others. They’re usually required only when symptoms last longer than a week, start to improve but then worsen again, or are very severe. Worrisome symptoms that can warrant immediate antibiotic treatment include a fever over 38.6°C, extreme pain and tenderness over your sinuses, or signs of a skin infection, such as a hot, red rash that spreads quickly. ABSTRACT A total of 100 adult patients with symptoms and signs of acute sinusitis, who have given their informed consent, were included in an open, comparative, randomized study. Clinical diagnosis of sinusitis was confirmed by nasal endoscopy and sinus radiography. Culture of sinus aspirate was performed when sinus puncture was indicated. Patients were randomized to receive azithromycin (500 mg once daily for 3 days), or amoxicillin/clavulanate (625 mg every 8 hours for 10 days). Control clinical examinations were performed 72 hours, 10-12 days and 4 weeks after the treatment initiation. At day 10-12, 95% of patients in azithromycin-, and 74% in amoxicillin/clavulanate group were cured. By the follow-up visit, cure was achieved in 98% of azithromycin-, and 91% of amoxicillin/clavulanate-treated patients. In 3 patients from amoxicillin/clavulanate group the treatment failed, and in one patient from each group the relapse was observed.

It may be concluded that in the treatment of acute sinusitis three-day azithromycin is as effective and well-tolerated as ten-day amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Azithromycin is an antibiotic useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections. This includes middle ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, traveler's diarrhea, and certain other intestinal infections. It may also be used for a number of sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia and gonorrhea infections. Along with other medications, it may also be used for malaria. People with sore throats, ear infections and sinus infections get the wrong antibiotic at least half the time, researchers reported Monday. When people get the wrong antibiotic, not only are they often not cured, but it can help drug-resistant “superbugs” evolve, according to the researchers. They think part of the problem is that patients ask for easy-to-remember names such as “Z-Pack” and the study found that azithromycin, the Zithromax drug that gives Z-Packs the name, is among the most commonly misused drugs.“Overall, only 52 percent of patients treated with antibiotics for sinus infections, middle ear infections and pharyngitis (sore throat) received the first-line treatments recommended by prescribing guidelines,” Dr. David Hyun, an infectious disease specialist at the Pew Charitable Trusts, told NBC News. This is on top of findings released earlier this year that show at least a third of people who get antibiotics don’t even need them. Taken together, the two studies show a lot of bad prescribing of antibiotics, the researchers wrote in the full report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA internal Medicine. The teams at Pew, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the University of Utah and elsewhere chose ear infections, sore throats and sinus infections because they generate 44 million antibiotic prescriptions a year. I know what works and is easy to take and doesn't RIP my guts out and keeps working long after the last dose is taken. Other antibiotics, air purifiers, nasal wash systems, sprays, antihistamines.. ""I’ve taken this since I was 8 years old- I’m 28 now. I’ve gotten chronic sinus infections and ear infections and this is the only drug that has helped. Every drug has side effects and this may or may not effect you poorly. My sinus infection is worse (that horrible smell that comes with a sinus infection). And of course when calling the practitioner I'll have to come back and spend another $75 just to get a higher dosage. 2hrs after taking it my chest and upper arms and upper back started burning and I was sweating and just so hot but I took my temp and it was 97.9 . So far it's 7hrs later altogether and I'm feeling a lot better. Probably not taking the second dose tonight.""I had killer pain in my throat when talking and swallowing, by day 2 of the pack, I felt perfect!

You can treat many yeast infections with over-the-counter creams or suppositories that you can buy without a prescription, especially if this isn't the first time you've had a yeast infection and you recognize the symptoms. You can get a range of similar yeast infection medications without a prescription, too. Others are suppositories or vaginal tablets you place in your vagina and let dissolve. But if you get yeast infections often or they’re severe, you may need a prescription medication. In general, the more concentrated the drug, the shorter the time you have to take it. A vaginal cream that has the number 7 after its name, for instance, would usually be used for 7 days. If the same product name had a 3, it would be a more concentrated version of the vaginal cream and you'd only need it for 3 days. Your doctor may also prescribe a steroid cream for a few days to ease more severe inflammation, redness, and soreness at the opening of the vagina and of the surrounding tissue, called the vulva. Your doctor might prescribe a one-time dose of fluconazole (Diflucan) if you have a severe infection. This drug kills fungus and yeast throughout your body, so you may have minor side effects, such as stomach upset or headaches, for a short time afterward.
